‘Barker shines as Gibraltar seen off with plenty to spare’

LUCAS BARKER went past 50 with a highly accomplished innings for an 18-year-old and Max Ellis produced another fine spell of flighted left-arm spin as Guernsey eased into the semi-finals with a crushing win over the Gibraltarians on Horsham’s main pitch.

Under a hot sun, a team showing two changes to the side who had lost to Italy, hardly gave Gibraltar a sniff. Ollie Newey came in for his first game of the tournament and Chris van Vliet returned after missing the two previous games, while there was a significant change in the middle order with GH Smit moving up to four in place of Ross Kneller. There was much to admire from the young Sarnians, not least the speed with which skipper Jamie Nussbaumer bowled.

The Gibraltarians could hardly lay bat on ball as he tore in with the breeze and his four overs, delivered in two spells, realised just six runs. Van Vliet enjoyed a better game than he had against the Norwegians on Monday and when he gave way, Ellis again bowled with super control. Newey should be satisfied with his ICC debut spell and there never seemed any danger of the opposition getting away to a challenging score.

In reply, Guernsey lost Frith with 20 on the board. He had already been dropped badly once when he pulled a short ball straight to short mid-wicket. But Barker was soon timing the ball sweetly and Zak Damarell’s flourishing as a senior island player continued with a good knock that contained four fours and a six in a 20-ball 32. Barker remained assured through till the end, which arrived with 5.4 overs to spare and Smit well settled as he got a chance to find his touch. The Sussex county prospect ended on 51 with five fours and a six, but he was at the other end as Smit won the game with a mighty blow to the side of the pavilion.
