‘Guernsey finish third after win over France’  by Gareth Le Prevost        Guernsey Press 1st Aug 2022

GUERNSEY picked themselves up to end their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub Regional Europe Qualifier on a winning note yesterday in Finland. With Austria having comprehensively outplayed Bulgaria to win by 158 runs on Saturday and secure top spot in their group ahead of the Sarnians, Josh Butler’s side were consigned to the third-place match on play-off day and they saw off France convincingly by 56 runs at the Kerava National Cricket Ground.

Having opted to bat after winning the toss, Luke Le Tissier and Zak Damarell got their side off to a positive start and after the former fell for a quickfire 17, the skipper joined the left-handed opener to continue the good work. Damarell would end up as the game’s top-scorer with his 51 coming from 45 balls and including four fours and six while Butler made 25 and there were useful contributions from Matt Stokes and Adam Martel as the Greens racked up 153 for 6.

Martel went on to make an important impact with the ball, too, as he claimed three wickets for just 12 runs in his four overs as France collapsed from 56 for 2 to 97 all out. Luke Bichard was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 20 while there was a wicket apiece for Will Peatfield and Ant Stokes.

Austria hammered Norway by nine wickets in the final.
