‘Sarnians pick four teenagers for Jersey’ Gareth Le Prevost 2nd Sept 2026 Guernsey Press
Guernsey have turned to youth for Saturday’s Inter-Insular at Grainville. The Sarniana head to Jersey looking to end the home side’s run of seven consecutive victories in the 50-over clash, with the Greens having last lifted the trophy in 2015, and they have two key all-rounders from this summer’s Island U19 squad stepping up to the seniors in Ed Robinson and Freddie Forshaw, who joins his brother Charlie in the group. Another teenager, Harry Johnson, who has featured against Jersey in T20Is is also included.
‘Ultimately it’s performances that get you selected and Freddie has been doing well in the last two of three years as he has made his way into adult cricket. With Marty (Martin-Dale Bradley) having stepped back from playing regular cricket this year, it is virtually a like-for-like replacement,’ said Guernsey men’s team head coach Jeremy Frith. ‘Ed did well for us in Cyprus earlier this summer, he has come a long way in the last couple of years, he got runs against the visiting academy sides and he has made it easy for us to pick him. Harry missed out last year through injury, so tgis is another step for him in his development, another milestone.’
With Tom Nightingale out due to a broken finger, which has required a couple of pins to fix and therefore ended his season, and Zak Damarell also unavailable, Guernsey are happy to welcome back Luke Le Tissier to the fold after his own injury issues. ‘He is a crackling lad, he can bat and bowl, and I’m pleased for him because he has had a difficult couple of year with his knee problems. It has been lovely to have him back around the squad this summer.’ said Frith.
The coach also revealed that last week’s notification of Guernsey’s inclusion in next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028 Europe Qualifier has given the team a timely lift ahead of of facing the old enemy. Everyone’s in a good spot, the news we had about the tournament has given everyone a massive boost and the players know how far they have come in the last three or four years. Jersey are obviously a good side, but everyone is looking forward to finishing the season on a positive note. It’s a versatile squad with plenty of bowling options and pretty much everyone bats, so we have bases covered.’
The Inter-Insular will start at 11am on Saturday at Grainville. Guernsey’s squad is:
O Nightingale (C), Lucas Barker, Josh Butler, Ed Robinson, Matthew Stokes, Luke Bichard, Freddie Forshaw, Alex Bushell, Adam Martel, Charlie Forshaw, Harry Johnson
‘Spinners cast their spell as Guernsey come up short’ by Gareth Le Prevost GP Monday 7th September 2026
Jersey put Guernsey in a spin from which they could not recover on Saturday at Grainville as the Reds made it eight Inter Insular victories in a row. The home side’s trio of tweakers turned the game in their favour after the Sarnians had a promising start to their quest for a first 50-over win over the old enemy since 2015, and once they taken control Jersey stamped their authority on proceedings.
Harrison Carlyon got the most reward in the wickets column with four to his name, including three return catches, while slow left-armer Toby Britton was highly impressive with his control and temperament. But it was Ben Ward who really weaved a magic spell on the visitors, many of whom were left bamboozled by the leg-spinner’s variety and accuracy.
In Guernsey’s ranks they had their own ‘leggie’ in teenage debutant Freddie Forshaw, who performed creditably in the circumstances when he got the chance to turn his arm over, but where the experience of a first full inter-insular will, hopefully, stand him in good stead in the long run, just watching how Ward went about his business could be the biggest blueprint for his progression. Funnily enough though, when Chuggy Perchard inserted the Greens having won the toss, the Jersey captain did so in the belief that the morning conditions might be of benefit to his seamers. Lucas Barker quickly dispelled that theory, hitting Dan Birrell’s first ball of the match for four and further boundaries in the next two overs as well, before opening partner Josh Butler got in on the act in the fourth.
Butler claimed the first – and what would be the only – six of the match off George Richardson a couple of overs later and Guernsey were making seemingly serene progress at 32 for 0. after six with the hosts having already had to turn to their change bowlers in Scott Vn Breda. However through him and Carlyon, Jersey started to rein the opposition in as the last four overs of the powerplay cost just three runs and then the rugby star made the breakthrough immediately after the fielding restrictions were removed as Butler chopped onto his own stumps. Ed Robinson, another of the teenage debutants, made a bright start to his first cap as he drove Van Breda for successive boundaries in the same over, but he then fell in Carlyon’s next set and Guernsey were 45 for 2 as key man Matt Stokes strode to the crease. In typical fashion he got the scoreboard ticking almost effortlessly and together with Barker took their side up to 92 for 2 at the halfway stage of the innings, which made a score in excess of 220 a realistic prospect.
However, that third-wicket stand of 47 turned out to be the best of the innings and once the opener departed, trapped in the crease by a ball that nipped back from Perchard, Jersey sensed an opening. Britton had been doing a decent job in tandem with his skipper, but Perchard did not want to let Stokes become too comfortable and his recall of Van Breda for an over proved a master stroke, if albeit a slightly fortuitous one, because the medium-pacer came up with the way of removing Guernsey’ best player and that was to bowl him the worst delivery he faced all day. The short, wide one had four written all over it and Stokes admitted as much afterwards, but he got himself into two minds as whether to go over the top with his cut shot or not, and he ended up planting it straight into Charlie Brennan’s safe hands at backward point. From there the Sanian batting stagnated as they struggled to get Jersey’s battery of spinners away. The pressure built and the result was wickets, with four falling in the space of half-a-dozen overs.
Britton deservedly got reward his efforts when the ball after beating Ollie Nightingale’s outside edge with an absolute beauty, he hit the Guernsey captain on his left big toe in front if the stumps. The younger Forshaw brother came and went without troubling the scorer as the first of Ward’s wickets before Luke Bichard’s patient innings came to a tame end as he sliced a cut shot to Zak Tribe at point off Carlyon. Ward also removed Alex Bushell with a good ‘un and the visitors were floundering at 138 for 8. Adam Martel and Charlie Forshaw hung around for a while just to stop the rot temporarily, but in his final over Carlyon eventually clung on to a return catch after the ball had traversed over much of his upper body from a firm Forshaw drive and he picked up the wicket of Harry Johnson in similar fashion three balls later.
If they were to have any chance of defending a sub-par 161 all out, Guernsey needed to take early wickets and, to their credit, their seamers came up trumps as the new ball did just enough off the pitch to reward them. Bichard made the initial breakthrough as Patrick Gouge was struck in front by one that nipped back at him and Stokes removed his fellow opener Stanley Norman in a similar vein three overs later. Charlie Forshaw struck in his first over, getting the in-form Tribe with a peach of a delivery, to reduce Jersey to 21 for 3. But the Reds bat deep and with time on their side they had no need to panic. Having done sterling work with the ball, Carlyon and Ward did likewise wielding the willow, sharing a stand of 73 that slowly extinguished any hopes Guernsey had a remarkable victory. Carlyon was unusually subdued, but he did exactly what his team requiring in making 31 from 58 balls, while Ward produced the knock of the day to cement the man-of-the-match award.
He was able to pick off the bad balls throughout his time in the middle and also worked the ball into gaps at will to ease his way past 50 and when the winning post came into sight, he became more expansive to finish with a superb 82 not out from 86 balls with 13 fours to his name. The Guernsey bowlers never gave up and there was reward for Martel, who picked up the wicket of Carlyon, and also leg-spinner Forshaw as he tempted Charlie Brennan into a big shot with which the left-hander failed to connect. However, the Greens had needed more runs to play with to give their attack a real chance and, as it was, Ward finished things off with more that 13 overs to spare.
