‘Greenwood puts on a show to make light of run chase’ by Gareth Le Prevost Guernsey Press

NICK GREENWOOD put on an exhibition to guide Jersey to victory in game one of the Inter-Insular Cup Series at the KGV Having been set a target of 157 for victory, which was competitive if still perhaps 20 shy of where Guernsey would have liked to have been on the mat with a quick outfield, the opener played with both control and positivity to ensure his side were always ahead of the game thanks to a fruitful powerplay and carrying the momentum beyond the relaxation of the fielding restrictions. Initially it was Harrison Carlyon, unsurprisingly, who looked to take the attack to the home bowlers at the start of the run chase, hitting Luke Bichard for a couple of boundaries in the first over including one pull shot that had Ben Ferbrache interested in a possible catch out on the rope for a while but he was unable to quite reach it despite a brave attempt.
Teenager Harry Johnson bowled a more than acceptable second over into the wind from the Blanc Bois end, but then Greenwood really got to work as he targeted Adam Martel’s spin in the third, using the wind that was blowing towards his teammates in the pavilion to add two sixes to an opening four and put Guernsey on the defensive. The hosts struck in the next over as Charlie Forshaw picked up his first senior international wicket with only his second delivery as Carlyon top-edged an attempted pull shot straight up in the air and skipper Ollie Nightingale took the catch, but crucially the next breakthrough did not come until the 12th over, by which time the result was in little doubt. On this occasion, having played match-winning knocks in his previous two innings at the ground, Jonty Jenner happily stepped into the support role as he joined Greenwood in a second-wicket stand of 84. His partner quickly became difficult to bowl to as good deliveries were finding the boundary and inevitably those that did not still haemorrhaged runs with the Guernsey having difficulty stemming the flow as Greenwood reached his half-century in just the eighth over.

Eventually the belated introduction of Matt Stokes helped bring back an element of control and he split the prolific partnership with Tom Nightingale pouching the catch at deep mid-wicket that saw Jenner depart for 35 from 24 balls. By that stage, the mental arithmetic had begun regarding Greenwood’s capability of reaching a ton before Jersey past the winning post and it was still possible, just about, when 12th man Ollie Clapham made a sensational grab running in and diving forward at long off to give Stokes a second wicket and end Greenwood’s outstanding knock on 85 from 50 balls with nine fours and three sixes. That left Zak Tribe and Charlie Brennan to see their side home with 11 balls to spare.
Earlier, Guernsey had recovered from a spot of difficulty at 40 for three in the seventh over to post
a respectable total thanks largely to the efforts of Stokes, Zak Damarell and captain Nightingale in
the middle order. They had lost both openers, Ben Fitchet and Adam Martel, to the pace of Julius Sumerauer in the powerplay before Tom Nightingale missed a big heave at Ben Ward. The home batters had more difficulty in timing their shots straight down the ground than the visitors, but their orthodox and reverse sweeps were more productive, particularly for left-handed Damarell who top scored with 40 including half a dozen fours. But only the skipper managed to clear the ropes, on a solitary occasion, as the tight Jersey bowling and athletic fielding ensured their target was not a substantial one. Only Chuggy Perchard, who claimed three wickets, went at more than eight an over.
