‘Guernsey undone by Jersey spin at World Cup qualifier’

By Gareth Le Prevost        Guernsey Press      9th July 2025

A valiant century partnership could not prevent Guernsey falling to defeat in the ‘Battle of the Bailiwicks’ in the Netherlands.

Having been set 161 for victory in their T20 World Cup Europe Final clash at Voorburg Cricket Club, the Sarnians were put in a spin by Jersey’s opening bowlers Harrison Carlyon and Dom Blampied as they were reduced to 4 for 3 in the first three overs of the run chase, which gave the Greens a mountain to climb. However, Matt Stokes was joined by captain Ollie Nightingale and together they rebuilt the innings with a stand of 124, with both scoring half-centuries, and even briefly revived hope of the most unlikely of victories.

But in the end, the ask was too great and the pace of Julius Sumerauer helped turned the screw for Jersey towards the death and the Reds, ranked 10 places higher at 27 in the world, secured a 22-run win. ‘Obviously you’re not going to win many games of cricket when you are 4 for 3 in the powerplay,’ said the Guernsey skipper, who made 57 from 52 balls while Stokes finished unbeaten on 62 from 49 deliveries. ‘We came back nicely, but probably needed to go a bit harder, or at least get a start, and we didn’t do that.’

Carlyon was named player of the match for his 63 runs and brilliant bowling figures of 2 for 8 from his four-over spell.

Guernsey face the hosts tomorrow in the their final game of the tournament, having been beaten by a talented Italy side in Saturday’s opener and seeing Sunday’s clash with Scotland washed out. It is the first time the Sarnians have competed at this stage of World Cup qualifying, with the top two sides at the end of the week progressing to next year’s global event in India and Sir Lanka.

Jersey beat Guernsey to keep T20 World Cup hopes alive

By Brent Pilnick             BBC Sport England

Jersey beat Guernsey by 22 runs in the first match between the Channel Island rivals in a T20 World Cup qualifier. The win kept alive Jersey’s hopes of reaching the finals in India and Sri Lanka next year. But Guernsey’s first-ever campaign in the final round of qualifying for a T20 World Cup is all but over with one game left against hosts the Netherlands.

Batting first, Jersey recovered from a tough start to make 160-4 as Harrison Carlyon scored 63, with Luke Bichard taking 2-36 for their opponents.

In reply, Guernsey’s top order collapsed against the spin of Carlyon and Dominic Blampied and they were 4-3 after three overs. Matt Stokes and Ollie Nightingale’s 122-run fourth wicket stand restored some competitiveness to the Guernsey innings. But the Sarnians fell short of the target as they made 138-5 in their 20 overs.

Despite having narrowly lost their opening game to the Netherlands and then having their match with Italy abandoned because of rain, Jersey know victory over Scotland on Friday could secure their place at the T20 World Cup.

Harrison Carlyon’s 63 was the highest score by a Jersey batter so far at this year’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier. Having won the toss, Guernsey put Jersey into bat with the outfield slow following days of heavy rain – and it was a decision that was vindicated almost immediately when Nick Greenwood was caught and bowled for a first-ball duck by Anthony Stokes with his fourth delivery of the game. Replacement Zak Tribe was caught for six off Luke Bichard in the sixth over to leave Jersey 31-2.

But opener Carlyon and Jonty Jenner came together for a key 73-run stand before Carlyon was unfortunately run out as the latter’s shot was deflected onto the stumps by Adam Martel at the non-striker’s end. His knock of 63 came off only 50 balls and included a six and six fours, while the big-hitting Jenner went on to make 48 before being bowled by Bichard trying to sweep over the wicketkeeper, having hit three sixes and two fours in his 33-ball innings, to leave Jersey on 133-4 off 17 overs. Julius Sumerauer then hit 26 not out off 14 balls as Jersey ended on 160-4.

Guernsey’s struggles with the bat began very early as having seen Ben Fitchet survive a very strong appeal from the final ball of the first over, Martin Dale Bradley was trapped by Blampied for one at the start of the next. Carlyon bowled Tom Nightingale for one with the first ball of the next over before taking Fitchet’s wicket with the final delivery as Guernsey slumped to 4-3.

But Stokes and skipper Nightingale steadied the innings with an excellent fourth-wicket century partnership of 122 – adding 50 runs between the ninth and 14th overs as they tried to haul Guernsey back up with the required run rate. Nightingale registered his maiden international half-century and made 57 off 52 balls before he was run out with three balls left of the final over. Stokes’ 62 not out came off 49 balls and was his second half-century against Jersey in as many games but it was in a losing cause.

Jersey head coach Paul Hutchison: “It’s nice to get a good win against a good team. “We started pretty well, we targeted around 150 to 160, so to put 160 on the board after a tough start was pleasing. “We want to have a top eight that can go on and post a good score so it gives us a decent chance at the back end. “We’ve got to keep chipping away at points, we’re going to collect as many points as we can and then see where it all falls.”

Guernsey captain Ollie Nightingale: “It’s disappointing, I guess, we know Jersey pretty well. “We didn’t get the start that we needed, but we came back into the game nicely but it wasn’t meant to be. “Stokesy was awesome again and luckily I scored a few, but at the end of the day we’ve come here to try and win games of cricket and today it didn’t happen.”
