John Appleyard

John David Appleyard was born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. He played 5 List A matches (Gillette Cup) for Hertfordshire. He scored 13 runs and bowled 45.4-15-129-5

He also played in 150 Minor Counties matches for Hertfordshire in which he scored 898 runs (highest score 48) and bowled an incredible 2958.3 overs, 849 maidens, 7402 runs and took 358 wickets with a best analysis of 7-61.

He attended Oundle School and later played for the Oundle Rovers 25 times in the Cricketer Cup. He also played for the MCC and the Channel Islands Over 50s five times from 1991.

After arriving in Guernsey as a resident he played twice in the Inter Insular games. In 1979 he was on the losing side despite taking 5 wickets (Jersey 125 Guernsey 86) but in 1980 he was victorious (Guernsey 136 Jersey 96). His overall contribution in these two matches was 20-5-47-8.

He was a keen player and was instrumental in keeping the GICC going during the70s and 80s.

His father, Francis Appleyard, was a good cricketer as well. He played for Essex in 18 matches, scoring 74 runs and bowling 485.1-119-1210-30. He then went on to represent Hertfordshire in 76 matches scoring 1080 runs and bowling 1801.4-426-4342-218 with a best bowling of 9-44

John’s twin brother, Peter Robert Appleyard, also played for Hertfordshire in 8 matches scoring 154 runs.
