‘Powerplay problems lead to heavy Guernsey defeat’ by Gareth Le Prevost Guernsey Press
There was a lesson in having courage in your convictions on Saturday afternoon. Both teams approached their batting powerplay with the intention to go hard, but whereas Jersey executed clinically at the start of their run chase, Guernsey floundered and saw their chances of levelling the series dashed virtually within six overs.
In the build-up to the weekend, home skipper Ollie Nightingale had insisted that his side would take this approach in the knowledge that it could occasionally cost them early wickets and after being asked to bat for the second time in the day at the KGV; their top-order fell in a cluster. The most disappointing aspect
of the collapse, though, was that Jersey were far from their best with the ball. There were initial signs of
promise as Ben Fitchet cut Julius Sumerauer for four in the first over and then lifted Dan Birrell straight back over his head for six in the second over before Adam Martel added a boundary of his own as the hosts quickly put 17 on the board.
But then the momentum swung dramatically as the Greens lost five wickets for the addition of 20 runs over the next 20 balls with Jersey not having to do much more than continue to accept the gifts.
Fitchet seemed to get caught in several minds when Sumerauer dragged the first ball of the third over short and only succeeded in spooning a catch to Ben Ward at extra-cover and the in-form Tom Nightingale could not believe it when he slapped his first delivery, a short and wide one, straight to Jonty Jenner at backward point. Nick Greenwood’s first over passed without much incident barring Martel’s second boundary, but after switching ends Birrell then struck twice in successive deliveries. Stokes came advancing down the track but was spotted by the bowler who banged it in short and the batter spliced his pull shot to give a simple lobbed catch to Ward then Zak Damarell, who had batted well earlier in the day, got an under-edge to an indeterminate cross-batted shot and was caught behind. When Martel chipped Chuggy Perchard’s second ball straight to Jenner at long on, Guernsey had been reduced to 37 for 5 with the powerplay not yet complete.
To rub salt into the wounds, even when the fielding restrictions were relaxed the Greens continued to lose wickets as Martin-Dale Bradley, who had driven Birrell nicely for four earlier in the seventh over, picked out Harrison Carlyon at short fine leg with a pull shot.
Captain Nightingale and Ben Ferbrache started the rebuild by adding 19 for the seventh wicket, but the home side were in danger of not even reaching three figures when their skipper fell for 14, caught at deep square-leg from a top-edged sweep in the 11th over. But Ferbrache found a willing ally in Luke Bichard and together they showed some enterprise in getting the scoreboard ticking over with a mixture of good running and inventive strokeplay, which included a couple of switch hits for four. Their eighth-wicket stand amassed 42 before top-scorer Ferbrache danced down the track and passed the ball to give Josh Kemp a simple stumping but Bichard hung around for a run-a-ball 25 and got some support from Charlie Forshaw, who will long remember smacking Birrell back over his head for six, before Perchard claimed the wickets of Guernsey’s two teenagers to end the innings two balls shy of the 20 overs. A target of 135 seemed unlikely to test Jersey unduly and so it proved, although Harry Johnson removed Greenwood cheaply with Forshaw taking the catch at cover.
The youngster almost took an excellent over-the-shoulder effort in the next over off Carlyon, but the tough chance went to ground and from then on the Reds took full control. Carlyon’s 41 from 24 balls was merely a supporting role to Jenner, who perhaps wanted to make amends for having earlier produced something of a collector’s item by dropping a relatively simple catch by going on an all-out attack. He kept his unconventional shots in his locker, instead just bludgeoning the bowling to all parts in a vicious unbeaten knock of 80 from 31 balls with nine fours and five sixes to take his side to an eight-wicket win with eight-and-a-half overs to spare.
