Lt Francis Bardon Denham (3241) was born in Mysore, India in 1896. He joined Elizabeth College in 1910 until 1914. the Worcestershire Regiment and was killed on 7th July 1917 aged 19. He played for the 2nd XI cricket team in 1913, 1st XI Football 1912/13, 1st XI Hockey 1912/13. Shooting VIII: Fired in the Ashburton at Bisley in 1912, 13, and 14. Team finished 52nd, 22nd, 37th respectively.

He was 2nd Lieutenant 5th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment 1915. Promoted to Lieutenant in 1916. At the battle of Guillemont – Somme 1916 Henry Dickens of “B” Company, 1st Battalion, Worcester Regiment related, “Lt. Denham was in my Company. He was killed in the attack at Fricourt on July 7th. I saw him killed by a bullet from a rifle. We were crossing “No Man’s land”, when he was hit and fell dead. We had to leave him there and I do not know if he was found”. He died on 7th July 1916 aged 19 and is remembered at Thiepval Memorial, Somme.

Lt Cecil Frederick Napier Draper (3229) was born in Dublin in 1894 and played for College cricket XI in 1910 and 1st team in 1911.

He was in the 1st Bn Middlesex Regiment and was in action at the battles of Mons, Le Cateau, Marne and Aisne where he was wounded. He was wounded again after his return to France and died in June 1916, being buried at Bethune Town Cemetery.

Lt John Mathieson Forrester (2656) was born in Sydenham, London in 1875, parents coming from Pietermaritzburg in South Africa. He attended College from 1891 to 1893.

He became an accountant and insurance agent in the Transvaal and fought in the Boer War.

He joined the C Coy 2nd Regiment South African Infantry and was wounded in Delville Wood in July 1916 and then killed in France in October 1916 when his unit attacked German trenches but was caught in machine gun fire. His memorial is at Warlencourt British Cemetery, Pas de Calais. His brother was invalided out of France with shell shock.

Major George Herbert Forty (3058) was born in 1894. He lived at Candie had a successful time at Elizabeth College playing for College for 5 years at the top level from 1910 to 1914, captaining the side in his last year. He obtained a classical scholarship to Exeter College, Oxford but abandoned this in Aug 1914 and took up a commission in the DCLI. He was made a major in 1917. He does not appear as having been killed at the 1st World War. He was wounded by gunshot in the thigh later in 1914, he was wounded again in the chest in 1918 and due to his injuries he was sent back to England where he died in May 1922.

Although his wounds contributed to his death it falls beyond the Commonwealth War Grave Commission’s cut-off date of 31st August 1921. He was awarded the Military Cross with his citation reading “Temporary Captain George Herbert Forty, Duke of Cornwall’s light Infantry, for conspicuous gallantry in action. He brought his company up under intense fire to reinforce another battalion, displaying great courage and initiative. Later, although wounded, he stuck to his post and re-organised the line. He has on many previous occasions done fine work.”

However in 1918 he was back as Major GH Forty where he assembled a team to play in what turned out to be a close game against the College.

He joined the 10th Hampshire Regiment, received the Military Cross and was mentioned in despatches (Oak Leaf on Victory Medal). He died in London on 30th May 1922 aged 27 from the after effects of war wounds. He is buried in the Foulon Cemetery, St Peter Port.
